Kefir Milk - a nutritious powerhouse for dogs!
Share
One of the items we use the most when creating new recipes for our dogs is kefir milk. I first found the benefits of kefir milk when researching greek yoghurt alternatives. I felt that the amount of greek yoghurt I was feeding my dogs in recipes was quite high at the time, and wanted to have more variety in their diet. When I first found out about kefir milk I was surprised as it was so easily available! But, I had never heard of it before. Quickly I found out it was packed full of benefits for both dogs and humans. Since then, I have added it to a lot of my recipes. I find that it is exceptionally great for when you are looking for a creamy texture, but not quite the thick consistency of yoghurt.
Alternatives to Kefir milk
Often if I am out of kefir milk or am opting not to use it, I will use greek yoghurt and water it down. But, it doesn't have quite the same impact as Kefir milk. Plus, it doesn't have all the same benefits and variety.
Benefits of Kefir milk
Kefir milk is a fermented milk product and has several potential benefits for dogs, similar to its benefits for humans:
Probiotics
Kefir is a fantastic source of probiotics which are beneficial for the gut. Probiotics improve digestion and boost the immune system. The beneficial bacteria in kefir milk can help improve the absorption of nutrients from other foods your dog eats too.
Nutritious
Kefir is filled with essential nutrients, like vitamins B and K, calcium, magnesium, potassium, enzymes, and amino acids. These nutrients contribute to overall health and well-being.
- Vitamin K is essential for healthy blood clotting in dogs. Due to this it can speed up wound healing and prevent certain potential blood disorders.
- Vitamins B1, B12 and Biotin all have various exceptional health benefits. These include immune system support and protecting and maintaining your dogs muscles. They contribute to a healthy coat and skin. Alongside this, they can improve your dogs energy levels whilst assisting a healthy metabolism. B vitamins are essential for healthy dogs. They also contribute to maintaining a healthy nervous system and red blood cell formation.
Boosts Immunity
The probiotics in kefir can help boost your dog's immune system. This can lead to better disease resistance and improved health.
Aids in Digestion
The probiotics in kefir can also help with digestion, potentially relieving issues such as gas, diarrhoea, and bloating.
Reduced inflammation
Studies have shown that kefir milk has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation in dogs.
When introducing kefir milk to your dog's diet, it's important to start with small amounts and monitor for any signs of digestive upset.
